both of talented debaters. obama has some advantages. he's debated in the general election stage before. romney has the advantage of having simply debated more over the last year. so i think it's kind of an even stage there, but the situation is not comparable to reagan versus carter. the economic metrics when carter was running for re- election were extremely negative, much more negative than they are today, and just this last week, polls show that the pub has more confidence in the president's economic views and vision and program than romney. so he has lost the one advantage that he once had. secondly, there were a lot of independent, undecided voters in 1980 who had lost faith in carter and were just waiting to see if they could feel confidence in his challenger. there are so few independent voters. this is an election that's about mobilizing the bases. so going after the independent voter is not a big surprise. having said all that in the memo put out by david axelrod -- >> who is who? >> he's the campaign guru on the obama side. >>

a couple of days before the debate, embracing he was the godfather of obama care. the larger issue is, with mitt romney coming out and saying, i was wrong, does that help him reset his campaign? >> no. >> you say -- >> i say no because he's looking more and more like a shape shifter, which is precisely the stereotype that people have somehow in their minds held about him, including people on the right. you don't know who the real mitt romney is. by doing this it's like he's inflicting 1,000 cuts on himself. this constant movement and bobs and weaving doesn't help him recover when it comes to likability and trustability. >> anne let met get you in. in virginia governor romney was with congressman ryan there. they had the fireworks, and it actually reminlded me of when the republicans would criticize the democrats for having those pillars remember at the last democratic national convention. quite a beautiful sight, but even chuck todd and our first read team noted that image alone could look like you still have a few more debates to go. >> well, i think that's right.

four years ago, when john mcgain and barack obama had their first debate, obama was up 50-45 before the debate when it was said and done he was up 51-45. four years earlier when kerry and bush went at it, kerry won the first debate, no impact on the horse race numbers the only thing that changed this gives a good perspective, after kerry won the debate, kerry supporters said debates are really important. bush supporters said, not so much. >> gregg: i want to go back to what you pointed out. i remember it well the carter-reagan debate in 1980. democrats and carter had tried to portray ronald reagan as this crazy actor with dangerous views going to create armageddon in the cold war with the soviets. suddenly, america tens of millions of americans tuned into the debates and they said wait a minute, this guy is likeable, making a lot of sense -- >> charming, right. >> gregg: let's compare that to today. the president has been trying to, with attack ads demonize mitt romney as this sort of horrible businessman. might this debate be comeable? -- compareable? >> the debate in '80 was one week
